RELIABILITY

There is a lot more to making a 1911 run than polishing the feed ramp. I go over all of the parts as the pistol goes together. Just about every part gets polished, beveled, or relieved. Magazines play a significant role in the reliability of the 1911, as does the tension of the extractor.

ACCURACY

A match fit barrel is the biggest improvement you can make to the feel and function of your pistol. I have been taught the Miller AMU barrel fit style by Larry Vickers. I have also been taught how to fit barrels by Bruce Gray. These are two radically different ways of fitting a barrel to a 1911. I like aspects of each technique. I have been very happy with Kart barrels. I fit the barrel bushings so they can be removed without a bushing wrench.

SIGHTS

A front sight that is fast to pick up is important on a carry pistol. I like the XS standard dot tritium front sight or a SDM gold bead paired with a plain black rear sight with a .140+ notch. I’m not a fan of bars, dots, blocks, outlines, different colors, etc. For Novak cut slides I prefer the Yost Professional Grade rear sight. My favorite sight is the Heinie Slant Pro with the forward face recut to allow one handed operation of the slide. I have made a few rear sights from scratch that combine the best features of the sights mentioned above. I don’t think they are any better than the above mentioned sights, but I do think they are a nice touch on a custom pistol.

TRIGGERS

I think 5 pounds is a reasonable pull weight for a carry pistol. It is light enough to shoot well, but it is heavy enough not to get you into trouble when wearing gloves. I have used triggers from Greider and 10-8. I like Wilson Combat hammers and sears. The Cylinder & Slide ignition parts are the nicest I have seen.

MAGAZINES

I prefer the CMC power mags. They have held up better than any other mags I have used. I have also had good luck with Wilson’s mags. 1911 mags are disposable. Throw them away when they start acting up. The Tripp Super 7 mag kits are a good idea for compact pistols with shorter than standard slide travel.

GRIP SAFETY

I like the Chip McCormick and Smith & Alexander grip safeties. The CMC fits really well on the Kimbers I have worked on. The S&A is a good choice for Springfield Armory frames. I fit the safety arm to release the trigger bow even if a poor grip is obtained. I have been fitting the grip safeties blended on top with a compound blend on the bottom. This allows a comfortable grip while letting the lines on the frame flow smoothly.

OTHER SMALL PARTS

I use a lot of Wilson Combat small parts, such as thumb safeties, extractors, ejectors, barrel links, barrel bushings, and pins. I have used Caspian extractors, ejectors, firing pins, and firing pin stops, as well as EGW firing pin stops, slide stops, and ejectors with good results. Ed Brown makes the best checkered MSH I have seen. Ned Christiansen makes an Extra Stout plunger tube that won’t loosen up after hard use. I also use parts from other quality manufacturers based on the particular project and the input I receive from the customer.
