I have an extensive checklist that I go through when I work on a
pistol. Clearances are checked and the parts get replaced, fit,
beveled, and polished as needed. I check every pistol I work on,
whether it's an existing pistol needing minor work or a complete
build. The pistol is test fired a minimum of 100 rounds to verify it
is working properly.
Accuracy Work
A match fit barrel is the greatest improvement you can make to your
1911. I prefer to work with Kart barrels. The radial lugs are
equalized so all 3 of them make contact with the slide. The chamber is
finish reamed, the barrel ramp is checked and throated, and the muzzle
is crowned. The frame feed ramp is checked and adjusted if necessary.
The bushing is fit so it can be removed by hand. The pistol is test
fired a minimum of 100 rounds to verify it is working properly. The
slide and frame can also be refit at this time.
Sights
An easy to see front sight paired with a plain black rear sight is my
preferred set up. My go to front sight is the XS Standard Dot
Tritium. I make my own fixed rear sight that allows me to cut the rear
notch to your specification. The front face of the sight allows for
one handed slide manipulation.
Front Straps
I machine cut 25LPI checkering on the front strap and mainspring
housing. I also offer 3112 Flat Top. This pattern offers a secure grip without tearing up your hands or clothing. It has the advantage of being more durable than pointed checkering.
Grip Safeties
The EGW grip safety has quickly become my preferred part. I blend the rear tang in the out position and make sure that there are
no sharp edges when in the depressed position. They are timed to
release the trigger even when the shooter doesn't get a proper grip
on the pistol. I use the Smith & Alexander grip safety for Springfield Armory frames as it fits the contour of the frame better than anything else that is available at this time.
Thumb Safeties
I prefer EGW and Wilson Combat thumb safeties. For an ambi that holds up to hard use, nothing beats the Wilson Combat Bullet Proof Ambi.
Magwells
I machine the frame and then hand blend the opening. A Legacy Custom or Smith & Alexander magwell can be added
for shooters wanting a larger opening for faster reloads. I really
like using the Legacy Custom MSH to allow opening the magwell as much
as possible.
Trigger Work
I
prefer Greider or 10-8 triggers. I am currently using Dave Berryhill
ignition kits. These are high quality parts that give me a clean 5#
trigger pull. The addition of a Colt sear spring completes the parts list.
Refinishing
Parkerizing and KG Gunkote are my preferred refinishing
options. These are quality finishes with reasonable application
times. I will consider other specialty finishes on a case by case
basis.
